Individual post- analyzing camera, editing and mise en scene
- Tracking- during the titles sequence , we are introduced to one of the main charecters of the film which is Jack Wyler who is also known as the popular jock. we are introducced to him through tracking shot movement , we first see him exit his car and only see his feet and as the scene progressed the camera follows him to a prtrait of him self at which the camera pans up and we see who the charecter is. Tracking is used in the title sequence to emphasis his position as popular kid in school, so the camera tracks his feeet to represent that he is top and we are all beneath him. Also to emphasis his postion in high school that the audience are like the un-popular people in school always following him.
- Extreme close ups and low angle- A shot distance of extreme close up as well as a shot position is both used when the "picture perfect girl" is introduced. When we are introduced to the perfect girl, the camera angle is positioned at a low angle but looking up at the subject. This gives the impression that the subject is portrayed to be significant and angelic, towards the nerdy boys who are starring at her walk down the stairs. Due to the camera being at a low level and pointing up to a high angle, It reveals that because she's so perfect, she's at a more dominant hierarchy compared to the boys, whereas they are at a lower position. The extreme close up is also used in this scene, to focus on her face, which indicates the idea of beauty, and being the "perfect girl" in the movie.
EDITING:
- Cross cutting- Cross-cutting is an editing technique most often used in films to establish action occurring at the same time in two different locations. the cross cutting is used in the scene where the we see the the popular people, which are people like the teenagers and the jocks and it cuts back to us seeing Janey Briggs and her brother , who is the "desperate virgin" in the car with their rathe ron the way to school. the cross cutting is used in the scene to insinuate that the two scenes are linked some way and give hints as to the what may happen in the movie as it connects the unpopular girl to the popular kids , insinuating that somehow she is linked in some way with the pop;ar kids
SOUND:
- Accent-an accent is how an actor or actress may speak which may be an important aspect of there regional identity and as well as helping to identify any stereotypes associated with any characters. in the opening sequence this becomes evident when the "popular" girl prscilla walks over to talk to the jock and the jock is confused by the language she used and also the way in which she speaks in a really stuck up manner as if to insinuate that everybody is beneath her and conform to the stereotype that all blonds are clueless and are bimbo with the language she uses.
- Synchronous sound-Synchronous sound is sound that is matched
to certain movements occurring in the scene. in the opening sequence we see the used of synchronous sounds when
Rebecca Becker walking down the stairs, there is an immediate gentle harmony synchronising with her movement as she walks down. The sound is a gentle soft melody which could be matching to her personality or appearance, her being angelic and perfect.
- Clothing: Clothing in the movie is the most important part of the miss en scene of the film as its key to establishing characters and as well as helping to identify character stereotypes within a high school setting. More over the clothing helps to establish social class and popularity within the high school as well as regional identity. For example the popular guys all seem to be wearing some kind of sporting uniform or varsity jacket , the popular girls are wearing pink and very provocative clothing and the geeks are wearing very formal attire. moreover is suggests that typical american high schools are based heavily on their appearance and clothes as well as helping identify that high schools have many social divides and the clothing is based around that.
- Setting- Setting - Mainly in the title sequence, the setting is at the high school. The high school being the main setting location, as that's where everything occurs and how the characters are introduced. we see lockers in the hall ways, it immediately suggests that this is an American high school, as majority of school's in the US has blocks of lockers like that, the front of high school also gives the impression of a typical american high school because of how the building is built.

Easy A Analysis (Holiday Work) Task 15 & 20
Title Sequence:
- At the beginning of the title sequence we see farms, roads, public places and a high school which sets the scene of a small town. It then cuts into the high school court yard with the bells ringing and the students coming out of class. The credits of the main cast are placed on the floors of the courtyard as well as the walls of the school when the school is within the camera frame. Throughout the title sequence we hear the voice over from Olive, the main character telling us the story-line as if she is recalling the events which lead up. The last credit appearing is the main character and the director and producer are credited first which is unusual because in large budget teen films like mean girls and 10 things I hate about you usually credit the main character first and the director and producers last.
- · Screen Gems Sony production company
- · Olive bridge Entertainment Production
- · Director and producer (Will Gluck)
- · Movie title
- · Main cast
- · Main character credited last along with the character appearance
Story-line:
- After a lie about losing her virginity gets out, a clean cut high school girl sees her life paralleling Hester Prynne’s in “The Scarlet Letter”, which she is currently studying in school until she decides to use this lie to advance her social and financial standing.
- · Olive Penderghast – becomes the ‘slut’ of the high school. All the students think she is sleeping around with all the boys around high school thus gaining her a bad reputation for herself. The girls think this is disgusting and horrible while all the boys want to sleep with her so they can be known as one of the boys who slept with her.
- · Brandon – At the beginning of the movie we see Brandon get send to the principal’s office with a bloody nose hinting to the audience he has just been in a fight and portrayed as the ‘tough guy’. We find out throughout the movie his is in fact gay because he is getting bullied at school for being gay when he asks Olive to pretend to have sex with him.
- · Woodchuck Todd – he character is seen as a good guy. The one who isn’t quick to judge and is the one who is supportive, loving, caring of his friends and peers. He is friends with everyone and also known by everyone but doesn’t get involved with any of the drama and gossips that goes on.
- · Christians – the religious group who are very judge mental of everyone who isn’t a Christian or do not have any beliefs. They express their Christian characters by sitting in a circle singing god songs and praying for Olive as is going against what they believe in.
Target Audience:
- · The film is rated PG-13 in America and 12A in the UK. The target audience for this film is directed towards teenagers. The story and setting of a high school life relates to those near or the same age than the characters in real life. The concept of losing your virginity in the film would be a target for more mature audiences ranging from 18 to the mid-twenties as they like a reminder of how high school was like.
- At the beginning of the title sequence we see a lot of close up shots and mid shots. The mid shots were used to show the location the movie is set in for example the streets and school and the close up shots were used to show the little things like the oranges within the farm.
- As the camera approaches the school and credits start to appear, the shot is continuous. this means it Is one complete shot with no cuts. the camera starts off from a high angle shot from the ground then changes tilts back up to eye level and then pans to the left to show the school then tilts down again when the main character is seen being knocked over.
- Throughout the title sequence we hear the voice over from the main character talking about what is happening and gives hints foreshadowing some parts of the film. other than that, the sounds is mostly diegetic which means the sound on the set and for example in this set we hear the school bells ringing and people talking in the background.
- Although the exact location is not specified during the title sequence we cant tell from the shots of the empty streets, small neighborhood and the farms that this is a small remote town.
- The clothes and body language the main character gives off are casual which means she is trying to fit in as a normal girl but her body language when her books are knocked over shows us that she is quite shy and doesnt say anything.
