Individual post- analyzing camera, editing and mise en scene

Camera

  • Tracking- during the titles sequence , we are introduced to one of the main charecters of the film which is Jack Wyler who is also known as the popular jock. we are introducced to him through tracking shot movement  , we first see him exit his car and only see his feet and as the scene progressed the camera follows him to a prtrait of him self at which the camera pans up and we see who the charecter is. Tracking is used in the title sequence to emphasis his position as popular kid in school, so the camera tracks his feeet to represent that he is top and we are all beneath him. Also to emphasis his postion in high school that the audience are like the un-popular people in school always following him.

  • Extreme close ups and low angle- A shot distance of extreme close up as well as a shot position is both used when the "picture perfect girl" is introduced. When we are introduced to the perfect girl, the camera angle is positioned at a low angle but looking up at the subject. This gives the impression that the subject  is portrayed to be significant and angelic, towards the nerdy boys who are starring at her walk down the stairs. Due to the camera being at a low level and pointing up to a high angle, It reveals that because she's so perfect, she's at a more dominant hierarchy compared to the boys, whereas they are at a lower position. The extreme close up is also used in this scene, to focus on her face, which indicates the idea of beauty, and being the "perfect girl" in the movie.

EDITING:

  • Cross cutting- Cross-cutting is an editing technique most often used in films to establish action occurring at the same time in two different locations. the cross cutting is used in the scene where the we see the the popular people, which are people like the teenagers and the jocks and it cuts back to us seeing Janey Briggs and her brother , who is the "desperate virgin" in the car with their rathe ron the way to school. the cross cutting is used in the scene to insinuate that the two scenes are linked some way and give hints as to the what may happen in the movie as it connects the unpopular girl to the popular kids , insinuating that somehow she is linked in some way with the pop;ar kids
SOUND:
  • Accent-an accent is how an actor or actress may speak which may be an important aspect of there regional identity and as well as helping to identify any stereotypes associated with any characters.  in the opening sequence this becomes evident when the "popular" girl prscilla walks over to talk to the jock and the jock is confused by the language she used and also the way in which she speaks in a really stuck up manner as if to insinuate that everybody is beneath her and conform to the stereotype that all blonds are clueless and are bimbo with the language she uses.

  • Synchronous sound-Synchronous sound is sound that is matched to certain movements occurring in the scene. in the opening sequence we see the used of synchronous sounds when
Rebecca Becker walking down the stairs, there is an immediate gentle harmony synchronising with her movement as she walks down.  The sound is a gentle soft melody which could be matching to her personality or appearance, her being angelic and perfect.
MISE EN SCENE:

  • Clothing: Clothing in the movie is the most important part of the miss en scene of the film as its key to establishing characters and as well as helping to identify character stereotypes within a high school setting. More over the clothing helps to establish social class and popularity within the high school as well as regional identity. For example the popular guys all seem to be wearing some kind of sporting uniform or varsity jacket , the popular girls are wearing pink and very provocative clothing and the geeks are wearing very formal attire. moreover is suggests that typical american high schools are based heavily on their appearance and clothes as well as helping identify that high schools have many social divides and the clothing is based around that.
  • Setting- Setting - Mainly in the title sequence, the setting is at the high school. The high school being the main setting location, as that's where everything occurs and how the characters are introduced. we see  lockers in the hall ways, it immediately suggests that this is an American high school, as majority of school's in the US has blocks of lockers like that, the front of high school also gives the impression of a typical american high school because of how the building is built.
