TASK 2: prelim film

Title Analysis - The Avengers

My favourite film is definitely The Avengers produced by Marvel Studios. The superhero theme, action sequences and the minor adult humor is a combination of my liking's. I have researched the films audience for this movie using Yougov.co.uk which show the statistics for the film audience only in the United Kingdom.

The title sequence of this film is shown in an unconventional way by presenting it at the end of the film. The director has been credited first followed by other important crew members such as screenplay, writers, producers, music and photography. The main cast is presented after all of them which is unusual because the main cast is usually credited at the beginning or before these people. The name of the actor is shown in sync with an image of their character in the background. This shows which actor played which character to avoid any confusion.

Analysing type of title sequence and its order- TASK 7

Pacific Rim:

In the title sequence for pacific rim the title sequence is at the end of the film and the order in which the title sequence is seen is backwards to the usual order in which big hollywood films show there tittle sequences. The director is shown first instead of last which is the usually the order of the title sequences, but this is probably because its the end of the film so its first the audience see before they leave the cinema. The title sequence used in animation along with the the titles. In the title sequence we see  what the basis of the movie was along side the titles.

In what order do we see the title?

  • director
  • screen play
  • story by
  • producer
  • executive producer
  • director of photography
  • production designer
  • editors
  • music
  • costume designers
  • co-producer
  • casting
  • visual effects supervisor
  • animation supervisor
  • actors
  • production company

Sub Genres - High School VS Youth Drama

Analysis of Sub-Genre Conventions - Macro

Analysis of Sub-Genre Conventions - Macro

The macro aspects of a film include:
  • Who produces it
  • Audience for the films
  • Cast
  • Plot lines
  • Characters
  • General ideas
The Breakfast Club - (High school drama)

Key Plot?
  • Follows 5 very different students within a high school Saturday detention. Each character has its own distinct stereotypes. Questions why the students are in detention.
What order is the story line introduced?
  • Conflict between them as they all have different personalities.
  • shows us why they are in detention
  • Conflict with authority (teacher)
  • Expect conflict then they all become friends
Characters?
  • A princess
  • A brain
  • An athlete
  • A criminal
  • A basket case
Social groups? How are they represented (Positively, negatively, stereotypical)?

  • Princess - presented as a spoilt girl who only cares about the money her father gives her, and her appearance. we can see this when we see her with her father when she is introduced. she is also a "daddy's girl" type.
  • Brain - introduced as isolated, quiet and focuses on his studies. He also has very strict parents which contributes with the stereotype nerd with strict parents and gets the best results. we see this when he is told to try and study by his mum when being dropped off.
  • Athlete - introduced as the stereotype american jock with his varsity jacket with the schools team logo on it. The dad is only concerned whether detention will interfere with his son's sports record.
  • Basket case - immediately presented negatively with the name. she is neglected by her parents as they do not say a word to her and when she tries to talk to them, they drive off which shows the parents don't care about her. This influences her behaviour which is also why she has gained the name of a "basket case" from other students.
  • Criminal - While the rest of the characters are being dropped off by their parents, the criminal arrives by himself which contributes to the idea that a criminal is independent and doesn't like authority. He is portrayed as tough and intimidating.

Fish Tank - (Youth drama)

Key Plot?
  • The main character (Mia) is very angry. shows very aggressive behaviour (punches girl and throws rock).
  • Had an argument with her friend and trying to fix it.
Order of story line?
  • Mia is angry. Has arguments with everyone she comes across with.
  • Tries to release a horse.
  • The horse symbolizes freedom (Macro concept)
  • She feels like she cant breathe while being in an empty room and trapped. Possible connection to the concept of a fish tank.
Characters?
  • Mia
  • Mia's friend's father
  • Little local girl
  • Group of local girls
Social groups? How are they represented (Positively, negatively, stereotypical)?

All the characters in this intro as presented negatively. Both Mia and her friend's dad is shown being very angry and aggressive by throwing rocks and using fowl language. The local girls dancing are presented as the stereotypical 'chavs' with bad attitude similar to the american concept of cheerleaders.

Audience research: Avengers Assemble

The screenshot above shows demographics, top regions where audience viewed the movie as well as typical professions and monthly spare. This website shows that the majority of the audience for The Avengers were male ages between 25-39. I did not expect this at all because of the superhero and action scenes i would've thought teenagers between 14-19 would be the majority. The top region for the most audiences is the Midlands. This was expected because London being the capital is based in the Midlands and London has the most cinemas as well as population than anywhere else in the country so this contributes a lot to the number of audiences the film has.

This screenshot shows the amount of media the audiences consume. It shows that the average number of internet consumption is about 50+ hours per week and spends only about 1-5 hours a week watching television. What's more interesting is that the television show most watched recently was Marvel's Agents of Shield which is expected as this television show is a spin off from the movie with characters from the movie brought in.

Task 13

Reflection blog

REFLECTION TASK
  • Completed 10/12 blogging tasks so far.
  • Need to complete extension tasks to get a higher grade.
  • Missing posts 7 (pick favourite film and analyse title sequence) and 10 (target audiences).
  • Need to summarise and analyse more in depth with the posts.

analysis of sub genre conventions - macro

Macro Conventions - The macro aspects of a film includes

Who produces it
Audiences for the film
Cast, plot lines, characters
General ideas about the order or way in how the story is told

Title sequence - The breakfast club (high school drama).

What is the key plot idea introduced in the title sequence?

  • Saturday detention within a high school
  • Five completely contrasting characters, students
  • 5 distinct stereotypes
  • Questioning why the students are in detention

In what order is the story line introduced?

  • Conflict between them because they all have different personalities
  • Background/stories about why they're all in detention
  • Conflict between the arrogant superior (teacher)
  • Anticipate conflict but then they all become friends

What characters are introduced?

  • A brain
  • A princess
  • A athlete
  • A criminal
  • A basket case

What social groups are represented? How are they represented (positively, negatively,  stereotypically / use of binary oppositions) ?

  • Brain- the "brain" is introduced as being quiet, to himself and is more focussed on his studies. his parents are also seen when he is dropped off, and they are seen as being very strict, going along with the stereotype that kids who tend to be smart usually have very strict parents. we see this when he is dropped off his mum tells him to try and study in detention , showing all she cares about is his studies and goes along with the name given to him.
  • Athlete- the athlete is introduced as being the stereotypical american sports star with his varsity jacket with his sports team on it , showing he is an athlete. His dad was more preoccupied with what the detention was going to do to his record and how that would affect his sports past high school level, and the dad s only bothered about his son as an athlete.
  • princess-The princess is shown as a spoilt girl, who only cares about her father funding her, her appearance and shopping. You can get this impression when she has been introduced with her father. You  also get the impression that she is "Daddy's little princess"
  • basket case-the basket case, is shown negatively as the name given to her immediately sounds negative. She's dropped off to the high school without a single word from her parents/guardian and the parents drive straight off, as she's about to say something to them which demonstrates the thought that even her own parent's maybe don't care and she is neglected and influences her behaviour and is why she is seen as the basket case to the other students
  • criminal-wiht the rest of the rest of the characters they are all dropped off by their parents , in contrast to the "criminal" who walks in by himself showing that the character is independent and perhaps doesn't like authority much like a criminal wouldn't. Also he is seen as the typical american bully/criminal who is tough and intimidating.

Title sequence 2: Fish Tank (Youth Drama)

What was the key plot idea introduced in the title sequence?

  • Mia (main character) is very angry; she is shown as very aggressive and angry

 What characters are introduced?
  • Mia
  • Mia's friends father
  • Local girls

What social groups are represented? How are they represented? (Positively, negatively, stereotypically, use of binary oppositions?)

All the characters have been portrayed negatively:
  • Mia as well as her friend’s father are portrayed as angry and aggressive
  •  The local girls are represented as stereotypical chavs. They wear big earrings and "slutty clothing" and have a bad attitude/behaviour towards people in the area.
  • Also the local boys are what we see as stereotypical trouble makers and boys that live on these estates, wearing tracksuits and have dogs
