analysis of sub genre conventions - macro

Macro Conventions - The macro aspects of a film includes

Who produces it
Audiences for the film
Cast, plot lines, characters
General ideas about the order or way in how the story is told

Title sequence - The breakfast club (high school drama).

What is the key plot idea introduced in the title sequence?

  • Saturday detention within a high school
  • Five completely contrasting characters, students
  • 5 distinct stereotypes
  • Questioning why the students are in detention

In what order is the story line introduced?

  • Conflict between them because they all have different personalities
  • Background/stories about why they're all in detention
  • Conflict between the arrogant superior (teacher)
  • Anticipate conflict but then they all become friends

What characters are introduced?

  • A brain
  • A princess
  • A athlete
  • A criminal
  • A basket case

What social groups are represented? How are they represented (positively, negatively,  stereotypically / use of binary oppositions) ?

  • Brain- the "brain" is introduced as being quiet, to himself and is more focussed on his studies. his parents are also seen when he is dropped off, and they are seen as being very strict, going along with the stereotype that kids who tend to be smart usually have very strict parents. we see this when he is dropped off his mum tells him to try and study in detention , showing all she cares about is his studies and goes along with the name given to him.
  • Athlete- the athlete is introduced as being the stereotypical american sports star with his varsity jacket with his sports team on it , showing he is an athlete. His dad was more preoccupied with what the detention was going to do to his record and how that would affect his sports past high school level, and the dad s only bothered about his son as an athlete.
  • princess-The princess is shown as a spoilt girl, who only cares about her father funding her, her appearance and shopping. You can get this impression when she has been introduced with her father. You  also get the impression that she is "Daddy's little princess"
  • basket case-the basket case, is shown negatively as the name given to her immediately sounds negative. She's dropped off to the high school without a single word from her parents/guardian and the parents drive straight off, as she's about to say something to them which demonstrates the thought that even her own parent's maybe don't care and she is neglected and influences her behaviour and is why she is seen as the basket case to the other students
  • criminal-wiht the rest of the rest of the characters they are all dropped off by their parents , in contrast to the "criminal" who walks in by himself showing that the character is independent and perhaps doesn't like authority much like a criminal wouldn't. Also he is seen as the typical american bully/criminal who is tough and intimidating.

Title sequence 2: Fish Tank (Youth Drama)

What was the key plot idea introduced in the title sequence?

  • Mia (main character) is very angry; she is shown as very aggressive and angry
  • Had an argument with her close friend

in what order is the storyline introduced?
  • Mia is angry and has an argument with everyone she comes across
  • She tries to release a horse.
  • The horse is a macro concept it symbolizes freedom
  • Mia feels as if she can't breathe, is in an empty room and trapped. This links with the concept of a fish tank

 What characters are introduced?
  • Mia
  • Mia's friends father
  • Local girls

What social groups are represented? How are they represented? (Positively, negatively, stereotypically, use of binary oppositions?)

All the characters have been portrayed negatively:
  • Mia as well as her friend’s father are portrayed as angry and aggressive
  •  The local girls are represented as stereotypical chavs. They wear big earrings and "slutty clothing" and have a bad attitude/behaviour towards people in the area.
  • Also the local boys are what we see as stereotypical trouble makers and boys that live on these estates, wearing tracksuits and have dogs

  • unpopular geeky girl, wil transform into the beautiful popular girl
  • the unpopular girl will end up with the popular guy
in what order is the story line introduced:

  • introduced to the main character "unpopular girl"
  • introduced to the lazy dad
  • we see the students split into there stereotypical grouping
  • introduced to the popular guy and the mean girls

What characters are introduced?

  • Nerds/Losers
