Categorizing title sequences

titles on a blank screen:
This types of title sequence is a low budget technique of trying to get institutional information across. its done by having a black background and titles in white to create contrast so the information is clearly seen.

Example: Psycho

  • plain , easy to understand and allows the audience to clearly see who the relevant people were involved with the film
  • music in the back round allows audience to get a sense of the genre

Titles on stil images:
  • these title are more developed than title on a blank screen and developed to include hand drawn borders and other images
  • image used in the background used to hint at the genre of the film
  • development of titles meant titles were getting longer and allowed more to be included, rather than just the studio name
  • As the they started to get more complex, people started to recognise the importance of title sequences to the film
Example: wimbledon
  • Aesthetically more pleasing and the people viewing the film its a lot more enticing to look at and gets the message across a lot better than words on a blank screen
Titles over moving images:
  • Incorporates the credit titles with moving images behind titles and incorporates sound but no dialogue.
  • reasons for using moving images: 1. metaphor 2.narrative thread, introduces story lines of the film
Example: city of god

  • It allows the audience to see the information as week as get hooked into the film with the surrounding images.
  • Also it allows the film to set the scene and get straight into the film
titles using animation or motion:

  • titles them selves became part of the moving image and are integrated together with image we see
  • requires a lot of technology and stylised edits

Example: Casino royal

  • Symbolic images and shapes of what will happen in the movie.
  •  Foreshadowing scenes within the animation.
  •  Each animation and image is relevant to the theme

What two title sequences are most important:
  • titles using animation or motion
  • titles over moving images
